Inside the city there are no house numbers and no residential mail delivery. An address is a street and a position — “Casanova 3 SW of 13th” — and many houses go by name instead. A server working from a numbered address on a summons has nothing to navigate to. We read these addresses the way the post office does.

Del Monte Forest is entered through gates, and the lanes inside are private, winding and lightly signed. Knowing which entrance to use, and how to reach a residence once inside, is the difference between an attempt and a completed serve.

Carmel Highlands and the coast run on long private drives
South of Carmel the addresses sit off Highway 1 at the top of unmarked driveways, often several hundred feet from the road, and cell coverage drops out where you would want to call for directions.
